Late to the Party: Misfits Series 1 Episode 2

Misfits is a British science fiction drama television show about a group of young offenders sentenced to work in a community service program, where they obtain supernatural powers after a strange electrical storm. The first series started broadcasting on 12 November 2009 on E4. The show follows the lives of the four 20 somethings as they try to deal with their new super powers and finish their community service. All while slacking off and avoiding being killed by others who have been affected by the storm.

Nathan is still angry about not having a super power as they do their community service. They find a naked man and we find out it's Nathan's mom's boyfriend. They wonder if it is the storm that messed him up but Nathan doesn't think so. It then cuts to the gang at a dance with senior citizens. Nathan finds an attractive woman who is volunteering and explains that he is doing community service for stealing Pick and Mix. It then cuts to the locker room and Curtis finds a note saying that they know what they did.

Nathan goes to his mother to talk with her but she is having none of it. Nathan lies, a lot and we see that by how much she distrusts him. He tries to explain how they found her boyfriend naked in an alley but she just ignores him and it soon cuts to Simon who is on his laptop. A friend request pops up by a ShyGirl18 and wants to chat. He filmed the storm and she seemed to have liked the video. It then cuts to Nathan in the community center eating some pizza, not sure how he bought it, probably stole it; but the lights turn on and he like a girl in a horror flick investigates.

He meets up with the girl from the senior dance and she is surprised to see him as much as he is for her. He asks her for a drink, they break into a part of the community center and get drunk, dress up and I think even do some cocaine. They share a spliff and she asks for a photo and she takes one with her phone. She sees his mom's boyfriend and he steals her phone to snap a photo of him for evidence. The camera work is really interesting for this scene and the montage of theirs before. He is then attacked by the naked man like the man was a dog and before long the man runs off.

We see Curtis sitting alone and he flirts with Alisha, we start to see their relationship start to bloom. Nathan shows her the cell phone photos to Kelley and Simon. Nathan is quite angry at their apathy. It then cuts to Simon in the locker room, he goes invisible and the girls walk in and start to change. He gets to see quite a bit and so do we. I remember first watching the series and being creeped out by Simon. Will my views of him change?

Nathan breaks into his house to talk with his mom's boyfriend to get rid of him. But it doesn't works because she walks in to her son punching her new boyfriend. He explains that he told her already and that he seems to turn into a dog. She is fine with it and even goes to smack him. So he leaves and goes to find the girl he spent the night with. He returns her phone and she asks if he is okay. He explains how his mother has never smacked him and he wants her to be alone. She says that it is because he wants her attention. She basically tells him to grow up.

He wonders why she left him and it was because he was too busy chasing a naked man. Oh hey look sex scene, with nudity. Just wanted to point that out. He finishes early and she has a laugh about his "O" face. The resume having sex and as she gets closer to orgasms she starts to age. She seems to have the ability to be younger and it freaks Nathan out, like it would with anyone. She says she is 82 and she liked him but he leaves her. Even after her calls of fear. She is worried that she is turning old again but he doesn't listen.

It cuts to Alisha and the officer that is talking to her tries to add to her community service and as he touches her. He goes into a sexual frenzy and when she gets away as the Probation worker arrives. The probation worker tries to help her but she just walks away. It cuts to another senior dance and we hear James Blunts "You're Beautiful" and we see a great dance scene with Simon. The lady that Nathan shagged tries to go over to him and he runs away to hide under the bridge and smoke a spliff. They find out that he had sex with the older lady and make fun of her.

It cuts back to Simon and he gets an IM from ShyGirl18/ He asks for a photo but she says no and logs off. Nathan then goes to the older woman's house. He walks in because no one answers the door and it's oddly quiet. He finds her dead in a chair with a photo album. He looks through it to see pictures of the woman he had known when she was younger. He says he is sorry and almost gives her one last kiss but ruffles her hair instead. He goes to his mother to try and work things out, in his own way. It cuts to the gang and Simon suggests they need to be ready for others with powers. They get another note and we even get a creepy close up of the new probation worker being all creepy.

Final Thoughts: The episode has some great cinematic shots, well chosen music and it's still building the mystery of what will occur. They hint at others gaining powers which is interesting to see who has what. So far Nathan is my favorite character, Kelly is a close second and Simon is bringing up the third place spot. So far I don't truly care for Alisha and Curtis.

I like how the show is about super powered people but they never do anything with the powers. They generally use them for selfish means which is so enjoyable to see. Most hero tales have the people saving the day. All they do is kill a probation worker, try to cover it up and as the show goes on they may meet others like them. The first few episodes are slow going but you can see the series has an over arching story. Unlike Skins where you get a mini movie every week, this show you get one epic story. It feels a lot like American TV, maybe more like HBO because it has "adult langue" and nudity. But seriously it is a good show and it gets so much better, so stay tuned.
