The Avengers

The most anticipated movie for super hero fans, especially the Marvel Zombies. It's the sixth instalment in the Marvel Film Universe. This movie has been building up for four years since the release of Iron Man. But the super hero team has had attempts at being a movie, probably even a tv show and we did get some great animated features but in 2008 with the release of Iron Man we got a super hero move that connected with another super hero movie; that being the Hulk with Edward Norton. Sadly Norton does not return as the Hulk because of contract disputes but he is replaced by Mark Ruffalo and I have to say I think I liked him more than Norton. But I'll explain that later.

Joss Whedon (Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel, Firefly and Dollhouse) helms the project as Director and secondary writer of the script. Zak Penn's script. You can really feel the Whedon writing in the movie. His dialogue is very snappy, intelligent and each character has wonderful banter. I personally belive that he made this movie better but he had a great cast to work with.

The Plot: Nick Fury of S.H.I.E.L.D. has been put against a wall with the threat of Loki the Trickster God of the alien world Asgard he must assemble Earth's mightiest warriors. The Avengers Initiative a government project that had been tossed aside is reinstated against the Council's orders and the super team must work together to stop Loki and his alien army the Chitari.

My Thoughts: I remember when Iron Man was talked about and Robert Downey Jr was cast, I was very excited and so far his three performances of Tony Stark have gotten better in each film.  Chris Pine still plays Steve Rodgers as well as he did in Captain America. Samuel L. Jackson reprises his role as Nick Fury but now with a bigger part than before and he may soon get his own movie. Chris Hemsworth takes on the mantel of the Vicking God Thor and he has gotten better. I say it is due to the script and editor. Plus no Natalie Portman boring up the film. Sorry Natalie but you were the weakest part of Thor. Mark Ruffalo takes up the mantle of Bruce Banner and does a fantastic job. Scarlet Johansson reprises her role of Black Widow and is another great Whedon-esque super heroine. She is never a damsel in distress and can keep up with the super guys and she doesn't even have any powers. Jermey Rener plays Hawkeye, sadly he nor Black Widow got their own movie but I hope to see more of them. One can dream, yeah?

The story is a nice alien invasion story with a few small origin stories for the new characters and refresher for the others. As I stated the movie is well written, in both plot and dialogue. I was quite surprised at how funny everything was. But ti wasn't parodying itself. It did a few tongue and cheek jokes as to the whole adults running around in spandex saving the Earth but not like terrible comedies do. The jokes are clever, the visual gags are rare but when they occur, well at the screening I saw people were laughing loudly and applauding. I have to say it almost made the movie better.

The hardest part of the review is avoiding spoilers so I need to keep this review short and sweet. Go see the Avengers. It is a must see, especially in IMAX, now I hate 3D but the screen size is so large and the sound is so powerful, you feel like you're in the movie. The 3D effects are few and far between and I tended to fidget with my glasses because my eyes would hurt but the movie was so good this didn't detract from it. So if you see one super hero film this year, make it Avengers and if you see two, I would put my money on Dark Knight Rises but that's because I'm a huge Batman nerd.

If you enjoyed the other five installments this is a worthy conclusion to them. But I have a feeling with the amount of money the movie has made so far and will make. It guarantees a sequel and I'm so excited. As long as everyone returns. Joss Whedon, I hope this helps your career because you're an amazing writer!
