Late to the Party: Misfits Series 1 Episode 6

Misfits is a British science fiction drama television show about a group of young offenders sentenced to work in a community service program, where they obtain supernatural powers after a strange electrical storm. The first series started broadcasting on 12 November 2009 on E4. The show follows the lives of the four 20 somethings as they try to deal with their new super powers and finish their community service. All while slacking off and avoiding being killed by others who have been affected by the storm.

I'm sorry about last week, but I had a bit of a snafu and now that it is taken care of I can review the final episode of Misfits series 1. A lot has happened in only six episodes and it all comes to a head in the finale. In these six episodes, they gain super powers, killed two probation workers and we learned to love some of the characters.

The episode starts with a speech about sinning, a girl is confessing her sins in front of a group of peers. As she confesses it pans over to the gang. Alisha remarks that the girl that is confessing used to be a proper slag. She even shows off an impersonation of the girl. They find out a little bit about the gathering, the people in the group seem to be the most unlikely people to have such a change. Something is up and the gang needs to figure out what it is.

The gang doesn't know Simon killed Sally, he says she went away to Greece and hasn't said anything. Nathan continues to mess around with Simon, by kicking a ball at him. But Simon starts to fight back before leaving. It cuts away to a girl adjusting her cross and she can hear Alisha and Curtis mutually masturbating each other. When Alisha comes out she gets in a verbal altercation with the girl and then uses some mind control on Alisha.

Simon has hidden away Sally in a freezer at the community center. It cuts to Nathan on the phone to some phone sex line, the detective that was helping Sally checks in on her. But Nathan has no idea she is dead and frozen. The others are in wheelchairs as they see Alisha walk by and she is looking very conservative. Curtis goes to her asking her what's up and she is ashamed of her old ways and tries to get him to come to the meetings. Nathan is outside and the girl tried to control him but he is listening to music and she can't control him. It cuts to the rest of the group in the bathroom, they figure out she is probably brain washed.

Nathan's constant bickering with Simon is starting to become less than teasing. Because Simon has started to fight back. We get a nice scene with Kelley and Nathan, they have started to hang out more and while they enjoy some pizza and some funny stories they see the weird cult with Curtis. They spy on what happens and the next day Kelley, Nathan and Simon see the gang has increased and increases more as she does a news interview.

They still can't find the probation worker and Simon continues to avoid the questions. They get some headphones, loud music and try to figure out what is going on. The group breaks up, Kelley is attacked by Alisha, Nathan and Simon run for it. When they get cornered, Nathan asks for help but Simon goes invisible and runs away. Luckily for Nathan a guy in an orange hoodie on a BMX rides up, picks him up and gets him away.

Simon hides out with frozen Sally, hoping to not get caught. Nathan goes to Kelley's house after avoiding the cult and she has been turned. He explains how he liked who she was. But it changes nothing and in the morning he almost leaves on a bus but decides against it. He decides to blend in to stop them. He gets seen but because he is incognito he slips by and he has a gun when he finds the leader. He holds her hostage until she changes the people back but she doesn't know how to.

He brings her to the roof and he makes a speech about being young to change the people back. She finds out his pistol is a water gun and in a scuffle she falls from the roof. He also does, Simon tries to save him but it impaled through the fence. Simon stands there in disbelief as Nathan lay dead on the fence. It cuts to a funeral home and Kelley puts his iPod in his front pocket before sitting down. He is buried and at the cemetery the main group stands at his grave. Alisha feels a bit awkward and asks to go for a drink. As they drink Simon tells Kelley he is sorry with his thoughts but she leaves.

Simon follows Kelley and hands her a disk for her to watch and it is a collection of videos of Nathan. We see a nice montage of Nathan and the final scene is the cemetery he is buried at. It pans around and we find out Nathan is alive. Buried alive. The credits role as he listens to a song on his iPod and that ends series one!

This was a great season finale because it leaves it open ended enough for a second season yet it closes enough plots that they could have ended it. Luckily they didn't end it and we have two more series to review. Which will continue next week. This episode had great writing, spectacular acting and wonderful music. Music that would probably coast a whole lot of moolah to licence here in the states but in England they seem to be able to use nearly any song. I love how this is sort of a monster of the week style show. With the people who have powers appearing and the next series doesn't change that! So stick tuned until next week whe I take a look back at Misfits Series 2.
